Sizing Guide for The Bamboo Brace

The Bamboo Brace is available in 5 sizes and is designed to cover most of the arm, leaving 1-3" of space from brace to wrist and brace to axilla (see suggestions below).

The Bamboo Brace - Infant/Toddler (XS)

Age Range:
2-3 months to ~15-16 months

Specs:
4.0" (10 cm) long x 8.0" (20 cm) in wrap around girth x 1.5 mm thick

Recommendations:
The child's arm length should be at least 6" (15 cm) from the beginning of the underarm to the wrist. To ensure a secure fit and performance, we recommend 0.5" (1.25 cm) as the minimum amount of overlap on the wrap-around portion.

Notes:
For infants and young toddlers with low muscle tone/weakness (i.e. Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome) the Infant/Toddler (XS) brace can be worn in children as old as 18-20 months. However, if your child has significant spasticity (i.e. cerebral palsy) and is on the older end of the suggested age range, consider the Early Intervention (S) brace.

The Bamboo Brace - Early Intervention (S)

Age Range:
15-16 months to ~ 3.0 years

Specs:
5.5” (14 cm) long x 8.0” (20 cm) in wrap around girth x 1.5 mm thick

Recommendations:
The child's arm length should be at least 7.5" (20.5 cm) from the beginning of the underarm to the wrist. To ensure a secure fit and performance, we recommend 0.5" (1.25 cm) as the minimum amount of overlap on the wrap-around portion.

Notes:
The Early Intervention (S) size is very effective on a wide range of children with both higher and lower muscle tone. It is a sound selection if your child is growing out of toddlerhood and is of average size for their age. Consider the Younger Grade School (M) size for children around 3.5 years in cases of spasticity (i.e. cerebral palsy) or in children who experience stereotypies such as a very strong consistent urge to interact with the head, neck and face.

The Bamboo Brace - Younger Grade School (M)

Age Range:
~3.5 years to 8-9 Years

Specs:
7.25” (18.5 cm) long x 10" (25.5 cm) in wrap around girth x 3.0 mm thick

Recommendations:
The child's arm length should be at least 9.5" (24 cm) from the beginning of the underarm to the wrist. To ensure a secure fit and performance, we recommend 0.5" (1.25 cm) as the minimum amount of overlap on the wrap-around portion.

Notes:
The Younger Grade School (M) brace is a good option for many 3-4 year-olds through 8-9 year-olds. There are some larger 3 year-olds, especially those with a significant amount of spasticity at the elbow, (such as spastic quadriplegia/spastic diplegia cerebral palsy) who will also do well with this size if they have at least 1-2” of space beyond the brace above and below the elbow. The Younger Grade School (M) size is also a favorite for girls with Rett syndrome, as well as children with autism and other genetic diagnoses where it helps deter stereotypies such as mouthing, hand wringing and unwanted facial interaction.
*The Bamboo Brace size (M) is also frequently used on the lower extremities of older babies and toddlers to support and re-align the knee for improved standing, cruising and bridging.

Cutting Down the Wrap-Around Girth of the Younger Grade School (M) Brace:
In situations where the user can manage the length of the brace with sufficient space beyond the brace above and below the elbow, but the wrap-around girth has too much material, the M sized Bamboo Brace can be cut down to mimic the wrap-around of the S size brace. Locate the gap between the Velcro patches about 2" (5 cm) up from the bottom of the brace and trim across with fabric scissors being careful not to damage the stitching securing the remaining velcro patches. Cutting down your size M Bamboo Brace does NOT void any warranties or guarantees associated with your purchase.

The Bamboo Brace - Adolescent (L)

Age Range:
9-10 years to ~14 years

Specs:
9.0” (23 cm) long x 12.0” (30.5 cm) in wrap around girth x 3.0 mm thick

Recommendations:
The child's arm length should be at least 11.5" (29 cm) from the beginning of the underarm to the wrist. To ensure a secure fit and performance, we recommend 0.5" (1.25 cm) as the minimum amount of overlap on the wrap-around portion.

Notes:
The Adolescent (L) size is designed for children in the later stages of elementary school to those in earlier teen years. 1-2" (5 cm) beyond the brace above and below the elbow is recommended for this size. The Adolescent (L) size is also a favorite for girls with Rett syndrome, as well as children with autism and other genetic diagnoses where it helps deter stereotypies such as mouthing, hand wringing and unwanted facial interaction.
*The Bamboo Brace size (L) is also frequently used on the lower extremities of toddlers and pre-schoolers to support and re-align the knee for improved standing, cruising and bridging.

Cutting Down the Wrap-Around Girth of The Adolescent (L) Brace:
In situations where the user can manage the length of the brace with sufficient space beyond the brace above and below the elbow, but the wrap-around girth has too much material, the L sized Bamboo Brace can be cut down to mimic the wrap-around of the M size brace. Locate the gap between the Velcro patches about 2" (5 cm) up from the bottom of the brace and trim across with fabric scissors being careful not to damage the stitching securing the remaining velcro patches. Cutting down your size L Bamboo Brace does NOT void any warranties or guarantees associated with your purchase.

The Bamboo Brace - Teen / Adult (XL)

Age Range:
~14-15 years – adult

Specs:
10.5” (26.7 cm) long x 15.0” (38 cm) in wrap around girth x 3.0 mm thick

Recommendations:
The user's arm length should be at least 14.5" (36.5 cm) from the beginning of the underarm to the wrist. To ensure a secure fit and performance, we recommend 0.5" (1.25 cm) as the minimum amount of overlap on the wrap-around portion.

Notes:

The Teen (XL) / Adult is designed for children in the earlier teenage years through adulthood. 1-2” (5 cm) beyond the brace above and below the elbow is recommended for this size. The user having nearly full passive range of motion is helpful in determining its effectiveness in rehab and behavioral situations as opposed to a contracture management tool.
*The Bamboo Brace size (XL) is also frequently used on the lower extremities of children to support and re-align the knee for improved standing, cruising and bridging.

Cutting Down the Wrap-Around Girth of The Teen (XL) Adult Brace:
In situations where the user can manage the length of the brace with sufficient space beyond the brace above and below the elbow, but the wrap-around girth has too much material, the XL sized Bamboo Brace can be cut down to mimic the wrap-around of the L size brace. Locate the gap between the Velcro patches about 3" (7.5 cm) up from the bottom of the brace and trim across with fabric scissors being careful not to damage the stitching securing the remaining velcro patches. Cutting down your size XL Bamboo Brace does NOT void any warranties or guarantees associated with your purchase.
